These units (while I have not figured out the exact formula and positioning) seem to have the ability to fire over the top of their melee counterparts in combat and Do not cause friendly fire. This does not always work. Best way to see if they have the line of site in that instance, move the unit behind a unit in combat without telling it to attack. Archers and the like will auto fire at anything they can without causing Friendly Fire.
